No. 18 Sooners Fall to Gamecocks in Top 25 Matchup

March 15, 2025 | Men's Tennis

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The No. 18 Oklahoma men's tennis team (10-6, 3-4 SEC) dropped a top 25 matchup to the No. 25 South Carolina Gamecocks (12-4, 6-1 SEC) at the Carolina Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Sooners narrowly fell in the doubles portion of the match, losing only their third doubles point of the season. With close competition on all three courts, freshman Alejandro Melero and sophomore Asahi Harazaki dropped their match, 5-7, but the Sooner duo of sophomore Kholo Montsi and junior Luis Alvarez evened the playing field after winning 7-5 at the two line. With momentum shifting between both teams, freshman Oscar Lacides and junior Bruno Nhavene sent their match into a tiebreak but ultimately lost the battle, 6-7(8).

South Carolina had control of the match to kick off singles. Oklahoma trailed 2-0 after Lacides dropped his match at the primary spot, 4-6, 2-6. The deficit continued when Nhavene fell 4-6, 5-7 on court six.

Oklahoma's lone point in the competition came from a straight-set win for Alvarez, 6-4, 6-4, on court four. The win marked the junior's fifth SEC win of the season and extended his win streak to four matches.

OU officially dropped the match to the Gamecocks when senior Jordan Hasson lost a three-set battle at the five position, 6-3, 2-6, 2-6.

Play continued after the match was clinched with Montsi and freshman Orel Kimhi still fighting at the two and three lines.

Kimhi forced a third set on court three but lost, 3-6, 6-4, 3-6. Shortly after, Montsi concluded his three-set match in a loss, 5-7, 6-2, 4-6, and South Carolina claimed the 6-1 win.
