Sooners Down Bulldogs Friday Night in Norman

March 21, 2025 | Men's Tennis

NORMAN – The No. 24 Oklahoma men's tennis team (11-6, 4-4 SEC) defeated Georgia (10-7, 4-3 SEC), 4-2, Friday evening at the Headington family Tennis Center.

OU tallied three upset victories, with a doubles pair picking up a ranked win before two singles players topped ranked opponents.

The Sooners claimed their 14th doubles point of the season with wins at the one and two lines. No. 49 duo Bruno Nhavene and Oscar Lacides took down the No. 26 pair of Freddy Blaydes and Niels Ratiu, 6-3. The Bulldogs evened the competition when freshman Alejandro Melero and sophomore Asahi Harazaki fell 6-2 at the No. 3 spot. Sophomore Kholo Montsi and junior Luis Alvarez pulled off an upset as the pair came back from a 5-3 deficit to claim the 7-5 win and clinch the doubles point. The duo have now won three straight matches to improve to 13-1 on the season.

The Bulldogs struck first in singles, where freshman Orel Kimhi fell 6-3, 6-2, to tie the match. Georgia took a brief lead when Montsi came up short, 6-4, 6-1. The Sooners tied the match as Harazaki claimed a straight-set win, 6-3, 6-4.

Competition heated up when the remaining three courts battled in third sets. Alvarez fought back from a deficit in the second set to send the match to a final set, where he had a dominant performance against No. 25 Thomas Paulsell. Alvarez sealed the upset, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1, to extend his win streak to five matches. The win marked the junior's 11th win of the season and sixth conference win.

Lacides clinched the match for the Sooners in a hard-fought third-set tiebreak. After falling behind in the first set, the freshman came back to claim the second set and saw victory at the one line, 1-6, 6-2, 7-6(3), over Georgia's No. 31 Miguel Perez Pena. Lacides has seen 10 victories on the season with two wins over ranked opponents.

When play was stalled, senior Jordan Hasson had an advantage in the third-set tiebreak, 3-6, 6-2, 6-6(4-2).
