FORT WORTH, Texas -- The No. 24 Oklahoma men's tennis team fell short to No. 2 TCU in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in a heartbreaking 2-4 result.
The Sooners took an early deficit in doubles with losses at the one and three positions. Freshman
Alejandro Melero and sophomore
Asahi HarazakiĀ fell, 1-6, and sophomore
Kholo Montsi and junior
Luis Alvarez dropped their match, 4-6, soon after. No. 13 pair
Oscar Lacides and
Bruno Nhavene completed theit match at the same time with a 3-6 result.Ā
Oklahoma struck first in singles with a swift win from freshman
Orel Kimhi at the four singles spot, 7-5, 6-3, tying the match at 1-all. TCU went back ahead when Alvarez came up short at three singles, 5-7, 4-6. The Sooners kept the fight and MeleroĀ battled back from a first-set loss, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3,Ā to give OU its second point. LacidesĀ dropped his first set but claimed the second set in a tiebreak to force set three. The freshman ultimately lost the match, 2-6, 7-6(3), 2-6, and Oklahoma fell behind, 2-3.
Montsi battled on court two in a three-set thriller. The sophomore trailed, 7-6(1), 4-6, 1-5, and went down 0-40 but fought off five straight match points to keep the hope alive. The momentum was with the Sooners and Montsi tied the match at 5-all. He dropped the next game and once again fought off five match points, sending the match to a tiebreaker. Montsi fell short, 7-6(1), 4-6, 6-7(3)Ā and Oklahoma's season came to a heartbreaking end.
When the match completed, Harazaki was beginning a third set and the score was left at 6-2, 2-6.
