FORT WORTH, Texas -- The No. 24 Oklahoma men's tennis team advancedĀ to the second round of the NCAA Tournament after sweeping Illinois, 4-0, at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center Friday afternoon.
The Sooners rallied in doubles to pick up their 23rd advantage point of the season. First off the court was No. 13 duo
Oscar Lacides and
Bruno Nhavene with a 6-2 win at the primary spot. Sophomore
Kholo Montsi and junior
Luis Alvarez dropped their match, 3-6, at the two line, leaving the doubles point up to the pair on court three. Freshman
Alejandro Melero and sophomore
Asahi HarazakiĀ pulled through and clinched the win with a 6-4 result.
Oklahoma pulled further ahead with a win at the six line from Melero, 6-4, 6-2. Alvarez gave the Sooners a three-point advantage after winning, 6-4, 6-2, on court three.Ā
The clinching point came after MontsiĀ fought back from a deficit in the second set and claimed the win, 6-4, 6-4, to send Oklahoma into the second round.
Three Sooners remained on court when the match stalled. LacidesĀ was in the third set, 1-6, 7-6(1), 0-1, freshman
Orel Kimhi trailed, 4-6, 3-4 and Harazaki began his match with a 3-0 lead.
