No. 10 Men's Tennis Goes Undefeated in Opening Weekend

NORMAN – The Oklahoma men's tennis team finished its opening weekend undefeated after going 2-0 during a Sunday doubleheader. The Sooners opened the day with a 4-1 win over Cornell, before defeating UTA, 4-0.

In the first match of the day, the Sooners took an early 1-0 lead after clinching the doubles point. Junior Luis Alvarez and sophomore Kholo Montsi won the set against Radu Papoe and Rodrigo Fernandes, 6-2. Soon after, sophomore Asahi Harazaki and freshman Alejandro Melero clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win at the three line, marking Melero's first win as a Sooner. 

Following an injury retirement, Kholo Montsi took the win at the four position to advance the Sooners to 2-0 over the Big Red.

Heading into second sets, the Sooners only led on two courts after senior Jordan Hasson claimed the first set at No. 5 and freshman Oscar Lacides took the first set in a tiebreak.

Hasson gave Oklahoma their second singles point, winning 6-4, 6-4, to put OU up 3-1. 

Lacides won a first-set tiebreak and clinched the match for the Sooners after winning 7-6(4), 6-3 at the two line.

Alvarez dropped his match to No. 23 Radu Papoe, 2-6, 5-7. Freshman Orel Kimhi's match was stalled at 3-6, 6-3 and junior Bruno Nhavene's match was abandoned at 4-6, 6-3, 3-1.

Closing out the doubleheader, the Sooners swept the UTA Mavericks, 4-0. 

The Sooners took the doubles point with wins at the two and three line. Harazaki and Melero set Oklahoma up for success with a 6-2 win, before Alvarez and Montsi won 6-4 to seal the doubles point. Nhavene and Lacides led 6-5 when their match was stalled.

Freshman Orel Kimhi came away with a quick 6-0, 6-0 win at the four line to give the Sooners their second point of the night. Soon after, Lacides came off court one with a 6-3, 6-1 victory to put OU closer to the win.

Alvarez clinched the match for the Sooners at the two line with a 6-2, 6-2 win.

Montsi had a 7-5, 3-1 lead at the three spot before his match was abandoned. Hasson was ahead 6-2, 3-3 and freshman Vojtech Petr led 6-1, 5-4 before competition ended.

Oklahoma is back in action on their home courts on Saturday, Jan. 25 as they host ITA Kickoff Weekend with a match against Tulsa at 1 p.m.
