Sooners Top Tulsa, Advance to ITA Kickoff Weekend Championship

NORMAN – The No. 8 Oklahoma men's tennis team advanced to the ITA Kickoff Weekend championship match after sweeping Tulsa, 4-0, in the opening match. .

The Sooners pulled ahead to 1-0 after winning the doubles point to start the competition. At the two position, sophomore Kholo Montsi and junior Luis Alvarez went up 5-2 on the Golden Hurricane before losing the deuce match point. The next game, the pair sealed the match at 6-3. On court one, junior Bruno Nhavene and freshman Oscar Lacides also gained a 5-2 lead before dropping a deuce match point. The next game, the duo clinched the doubles point for OU. The three doubles pairing of sophomore Asahi Harazaki and freshman Alejandro Melero were tied at 4-4 when the match was abandoned.

To start singles, Montsi took a swift 5-0 lead and Nhavene went ahead 5-1 while the four other Sooners remained in close competition with the Golden Hurricane. Montsi soon won the first set to go into the second set with an advantage. Nhavene dropped two games to Calum Jestin before taking the first set, 6-3.

After a close set with TU's Alex Okonkwo, Lacides was next to take a first-set win, going ahead 6-4 to begin the second set. 

Alvarez fell behind 1-4 in the first set against Luis Felipe Miguel but won two more games before Miguel took the set, 6-3.

Two Sooners went into first-set tiebreaks, with senior Jordan Hasson winning 7-6(4) and freshman Orel Kimhi winning 7-6(3).

Lacides, Montsi and Nhavene all took big leads to begin their second sets with Lacides and Montsi each leading 4-0 and Nhavene leading 4-1. Nhavene went on to claim the first singles win for OU, 6-3, 6-1. Next off the court for the Sooners was Lacides, winning 6-4, 6-1 to put OU ahead 3-0.

Montsi clinched the match for Oklahoma, winning 6-1, 6-3 at the three position.

When play was stalled, Alvarez was ahead in the second set, 3-6, 5-2, Kimhi was ahead 7-6(3) and Hasson was leading 7-6(4), 3-1.

UP NEXT

The Sooners take on No. 18 Stanford in the ITA Kickoff Weekend championship match on Sunday, Jan. 26 at 1 p.m. for a chance to advance to the ITA National Indoor Championships.
