Newcomers Shine in Opening Tournament

NORMAN – The Oklahoma men's tennis team wrapped up its first tournament of the fall season in Tuscaloosa, Alabama with second- and fifth-place finishes after picking up 11 total wins on the weekend.

Newcomers Bruno Nhavene and Oscar Lacides combined for a 3-0 doubles record and a 4-2 record in singles, each coming away with one loss on the final day of competition. The duo earned second place in the White Draw of the tournament.

Lacides, a freshman from France, earned his first collegiate wins on Friday with wins against Roberto Ferrer (Miss. State), 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 and Ferrer/Landry (Miss. State), 8-4 with Nhavene. The winning streak continued through Sunday before Lacides dropped his final match of the tournament to Nathan Cox (Vanderbilt), 3-6, 6-4, 10-8.

Nhavene, a junior transfer from Cowley College, went undefeated the first two days of the tournament, earning singles wins over Marshall Landry (Miss. State), 7-6(5), 7-5, and Matt Rankin (Kentucky), 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. Heading into the final day of the tournament, Nhavene had a 4-0 record and took his first loss against Michael Ross (Vanderbilt), 6-2, 5-7, 11-9 in his last match of the weekend.

Sophomore pair Asahi Harazaki and Hank Trondson competed in the Crimson Draw and completed the weekend with a 3-6 record and finished in fifth place.

Both Harazaki and Trondson went into the second day of the tournament without any wins but went on to pick up a doubles win over Stephenson/Weekes (Kentucky) and Harazaki claimed his first singles win of the tournament over Eli Stephenson (Kentucky).

Next up, Kholo Montsi and Luis Alvarez travel to Fayetteville, Arkansas to compete in the Arkansas Futures tournament from Sept. 16-22. Other Sooners will be in action at the ITA All-American Championships
