Sooners Sweep Mavericks in Season Opener

NORMAN – The No. 10 Oklahoma men's tennis team kicked off the 2025 season with a 7-0 win over the Omaha Mavericks Thursday night inside the Headington Family Tennis Center.
The Sooners took an early lead after securing the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. Bruno Nhavene and Oscar Lacides earned a 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles, while Jordan Hasson and Luis Alvarez picked up a 6-1 win at No. 3. The final Sooner pair dropped their set, 3-6.
In singles play, five Sooners secured first-set wins to give OU an early advantage. Newcomers Orel Kimhi, Vojtech Petr and Bruno Nhavene were first to pull ahead, with junior Jordan Hasson and freshman Oscar Lacides following close behind.
Kimhi earned his first win as a Sooner at the three line and was first off the court for Oklahoma as his 6-1, 6-1 win pushed OU to a 2-0 lead.
Two more new Sooners claimed their first wins for Oklahoma as Petr took the win at the six position, 6-0, 6-1, and Nhavene took the win at the five spot, 6-1, 6-2, to clinch the match at 4-0.
Senior Jordan Hasson pushed OU to a 5-0 lead over the Mavericks after picking up a win at the four position, 6-3, 6-2.
Lacides earned his first win as a Sooner to put OU up 6-0 after coming away with a 6-3, 6-3 victory.
Junior and No. 62 Luis Alvarez had a tight match with Omaha's Mikhail Korkunov at the one line. In the first set, Alvarez fought back from a 5-6 deficit to tie the match at six games all and force a set tiebreak. In the second set, Alvarez went out ahead early and claimed the final win, 7-6(4), 6-2.
The Sooners continue the action with a doubleheader on Sunday, Jan. 19 against Cornell at 12 p.m. and UT Arlington at 5 p.m.
