NORMAN – The No. 22 Oklahoma men's tennis team claimed its first SEC victory as members of the league with a 6-1 win over Arkansas Monday afternoon.
OU improved to 8-2 on the year and 1-0 in SEC play, while the Razorbacks fell to 11-3, 0-1.
The Sooners took an early lead after claiming the doubles point. Freshman Alejandro Melero and sophomore Asahi Harazaki were quick to give OU an advantage with a 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot. Junior Bruno Nhavene and freshman Oscar Lacides continued their doubles success, clinching the 1-0 lead with a 6-3 victory at the premier spot.
In singles, the Sooners won five of their six matches. Junior Luis Alvarez dominated at the No. 3 position with a 6-1, 6-1 win to give OU the 2-0 lead.
Freshman Orel Kimhi made quick work of his opponent, winning 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 4 spot. Clinching the match after a tough three-set battle was Lacides at the No. 1 position with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 victory. Lacides leads the team with eight wins in spring action.
Melero and senior Jordan Hasson went to three sets with both claiming victories. At the No. 6 line Molero won 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, while Hasson won 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (6) at No. 5. Hasson remains undefeated on the season and improved to 6-0.
The lone singles loss of the day came at No. 2 where sophomore Kholo Montsi battled to a pair of tiebreakers, dropping his match 6-7 (6), 6-7 (4).
The Sooners continue their home slate with matches against Tennessee on Friday, Feb. 28, at 6 p.m. and Texas A&M on Sunday, March 2, at noon. Friday's match against Tennessee is the first Friday Night Lights match of the season and fans in attendance will receive free t-shirts while supplies last. Sunday's match is the annual Bark in the Park match. Fans are encouraged to bring their dogs to enjoy an afternoon of tennis and can enjoy a free cookout while supplies last.
