March 02, 2025 | Women's Tennis

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 12 Oklahoma women's tennis team (8-2, 1-2 SEC) suffered a 6-1 loss to No. 5 Texas A&M (12-1, 3-0 SEC) on Sunday afternoon at the Mitchell Tennis Center.

Sunday marked the second matchup of the season between the programs as OU met the defending national champions in the semifinals of ITA National Indoors on Feb. 10, which saw A&M sneak away with a 4-2 win.

The Aggies controlled the momentum from the jump, notching doubles wins on courts two and three to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.

Finishing first, TAMU's Nicole Khirin and Lexington Reed defeated Julia Garcia Ruiz and Ava Catanzarite (6-2) on court two. Moments later, Salakthip Ounmuang and Emma Ghirardato fell (6-4) to Lucciana Perez and Lizanne Boyer, securing the opening point for the home team.

When play came to a halt, OU's Alina Shcherbinina and Chloé Noël held a 5-4 advantage over Daria Smetannikov and Mia Kupres on court one.

Oklahoma's lone win in singles came from freshman Gloriana Nahum. On court six, Nahum capped a 2-0 weekend with a 7-6(2), 6-0 win against Boyer. It was the seventh straight-set victory for the Cotonou, Benin, native.

On the remaining courts, No. 33 Shcherbinina dropped to No. 15 Khirin (7-6(2), 6-3) at the top spot, No. 12 Garcia Ruiz was defeated by No. 90 Kupres (6-4, 6-4) on court two, Ounmuang came up short against Perez (7-6(2), 6-2) at the three line, No. 64 Emma Staker pushed a third set but was upended by Smetannikov (2-6, 7-6(2), 1-0) on four and No. 105 Catanzarite suffered a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, loss to Reed on court five.

The Sooners return to Norman for their SEC home opener on Friday against Missouri. First serve from the Headington Family Tennis Center is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT. Posters, roster cards and "ace" shirts will be available to fans for free until supplies last.
