No. 4 Women's Tennis Sweeps Mississippi State for Fifth Straight Win

NORMAN – The fourth-ranked Oklahoma women's tennis team extended its win streak to five with a 4-0 sweep of Mississippi State on Friday at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

The win marked the Sooners' first over Mississippi State in the programs' inaugural meeting as Southeastern Conference opponents. Oklahoma (17-5, 10-4 SEC) also notched its sixth sweep of the season.

With SEC Championship seeding on the line, Oklahoma (17-5, 10-4 SEC) came out sharp, earning its 13th doubles point of the year to open the match.

Despite early deficits across the board, the No. 41 duo of Alina Shcherbinina and Julia Garcia Ruiz posted a 6-3 win at the top spot over Mississippi State's No. 46 Gianna Oboniye and Athina Pitta. It marked the third consecutive week the Sooners' No. 1 duo earned a win over a ranked opponent. Salakthip Ounmuang and Chloé Noël clinched the doubles point with a 7-6(3) win on court two over Alessia Tagliente and Carolina Troiano.

In singles, Ava Catanzarite gave the Sooners a 2-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-0 win on Court 5. The senior leads the team with 14 dual-match wins, 13 of which have come in straight sets.

No. 110 Ounmuang followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win on court three, and No. 23 Garcia Ruiz clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jayna Clemens on court two. Garcia Ruiz, a 2024 NCAA semifinalist, has outscored opponents 48-10 in her last four matches.

Oklahoma closes out the regular season Sunday at home against No. 35 Alabama. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT, with a Senior Day ceremony set to take place prior to the match. Fans are encouraged to wear white.
