NORMAN – The fourth-ranked Oklahoma women's tennis team closed its regular season with a 4-2 win over No. 35 Alabama on Sunday at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
After the match, Oklahoma honored seniors Emma Staker, Alina Shcherbinina and Ava Catanzarite.
The victory marked the Sooners' fifth all-time win over Alabama and their first as Southeastern Conference foes. Oklahoma (18-5, 11-4 SEC) also extended its winning streak to six matches.
For the fourth time this season, Oklahoma earned a win despite dropping the doubles point.
The Sooners took an early lead in doubles as Salakthip Ounmuang and Chloé Noël opened with a 6-1 victory over Sara Nayar and Klara Milicevic on court two. Alabama responded on court three, where No. 73 Maria Andrienko and Maria Martinez Vaquero posted a 6-1 win over Ava Catanzarite and Gloriana Nahum. After an hour of play, the doubles point was decided in a tiebreaker on court one, with Petra Sedlackova and Margaux Maquet edging out a 7-6(3) win over No. 41 Alina Shcherbinina and Julia Garcia Ruiz
With a top-four seed and a double bye in the SEC Championship still in play, the Sooners came out strong in singles, winning five first sets.
For the second straight match, Catanzarite sparked the Sooners' singles rally, rolling to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Nayar on court five. The senior leads the team with 15 dual-match victories, including 14 in straight sets.
No. 110 Ounmuang followed with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Milicevic on court three, her second singles victory of the weekend.
On court four, No. 63 Emma Staker added the Sooners' third point with a 6–2, 5–7, 6–2 win over Martinez Vaquero. The Tulsa native became just the second player in program history to record 100 career singles wins, joining Stefanie Flory (1982).
No. 23 Garcia Ruiz clinched the match for Oklahoma with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win over Andirenko on court two. She has outscored opponents 64–21 in her last four matches.
When play was halted, No. 30 Shcherbinina held a narrow third-set lead over No. 53 Sedlackova (7-6(4), 6-7(3), 1-0) on court one. Meanwhile, Nahum fell to Maquet, 6-1, 6-4, on Court six.
The Sooners now await their seeding for the SEC Tennis Championship, scheduled for April 16–20 in Auburn, Alabama, at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
