Oklahoma's SEC Championship Run Ends in Semifinals

April 19, 2025 | Women's Tennis

AUBURN, Ala. — The fifth-ranked Oklahoma women's tennis team saw its SEC Championship run end Saturday with a 4-0 loss to No. 2 Georgia at the Yarbrough Tennis Center on the Auburn University campus.

The Sooners (19-6, 11-4 SEC) battled the Bulldogs (22-3, 13-2) in a match that lasted two hours and 15 minutes, but a strong start from Georgia helped propel it to the win.

Georgia capitalized early in doubles to claim the opening point. On Court 2, Salakthip Ounmuang and Chloé Noël dropped their match 6-1 to No. 74 Guillermina Grant and Anastasiia Lopata. No. 36 Alina Shcherbinina and Julia Garcia Ruiz fell 6-2 to No. 2 Mell Reasco and Dasha Vidmanova on the top court, securing the doubles point for the Bulldogs.

Singles opened with a 6-1, 6-2 Bulldogs victory on Court 4 from No. 54 Aysegul Mert over No. 66 Emma Staker. Georgia's Sofia Rojas delivered a straight-set victory over Gloriana Nahum, 6-3, 6-3, on Court 6 to take a 3-0 lead.

Despite a furious second-set comeback by Ava Catanzarite, UGA's No. 85 Grant clinched the match with a 6-0, 7-6(8) win on Court 5.

On the remaining courts, No. 32 Alina Shcherbinina trailed No. 1 Dasha Vidmanova, 4-6, 4-5. No. 29 Julia Garcia Ruiz was closing in on a win on Court 2 at 6-2, 5-5, while Salakthip Ounmuang was in a tight second-set battle of her own on Court 3, leading 6-4, 4-5.

Oklahoma will now await its NCAA Tournament fate, as the event's selection show is set to air on April 28. Fans can tune in to NCAA.com for the reveal, along with additional details to come.
