Sooners Stay Perfect, Defeat Tulsa

NORMAN – The No. 12 Oklahoma women's tennis team picked up its fifth win to remain unbeaten on Tuesday afternoon, topping Tulsa 6-1.

The Sooners (5-0, 0-0 SEC) have yet to drop a doubles point this season. The No. 28 doubles pairing of Cara Mester and Alina Shcherbinina were first to finish as they knocked off No.. 26 Maria Berlanga Bandera and Lily Hutchings at the top court, 6-3, to stay perfect as a duo on the season. Salakthip Ounmuang and Gloriana Nahum clinched the opening point on court three, defeating Tayla Wilmot and Isabella Basson, 6-3.

When play was halted at the top court, No. 30 Julia Garcia Ruiz and Chloé Noël trailed 4-5 behind Tulsa's Ana Naranjo Martinez and Maria Manyoma Velasquez.

Going into singles with the 1-0 advantage, No. 68 Ava Catanzarite met Basson and delivered a quick 6-1, 6-0 win for the Sooners to extend their lead. The senior from Pittsburgh, Pa., has outscored opponents 36-3 in singles between courts five and six to start the year. No. 66 Emma Staker joined Catanzarite in the win column at court four by defeating Wilmot, 6-2, 6-1.

To clinch the match for the Sooners, freshman Gloriana Nahum delivered in her match to take the 6-2, 6-2 victory over Naranjo Martinez.

The match played out and gave the remaining three courts a chance to tally another win. Ounmuang was next to take the victory, defeating Hutchings 6-4, 7-5, at the No. 2 spot. On court three, Noël notched a 2-6, 6-3, 10-7, win over Manyoma Velasquez in comeback fashion. To close out the match, the Golden Hurricane would pick up their first and only point at the top court, as Berlanga Bander defeated OU's No. 43 Shcherbinina, 2-6, 7-6(12), 10-7.
