No. 12 Sooners Fall to Top-Ranked Bulldogs

ATHENS, Ga. - The No. 12 Oklahoma women's tennis team fell to No. 1 Georgia, 4-0, Sunday afternoon at Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.

The Sooners moved to 12-5 on the season and 5-4 in conference play with the loss.

Georgia came out strong in doubles to claim the opening point. At the second court, Salakthip Ounmuang and Chloé Noël dropped their match, 6-2, to No 74 Guillermina Grant and Anastasiia Lopata. Ava Catanzarite and Gloriana Nahum fell 6-3 to Aysegu Mert and Hayden Mulberry on court three, securing the opening point for the Bulldogs.

Singles opened with a 6-2, 6-3 Bulldogs victory at the top court from No. 1 Dasha Vidmanova over No. 26 Alina Shcherbinina. Georgia's Sofia Rojas delivered a straight-set victory over Nahum, 7-6(5), 6-4, on court six to take a 3-0 lead.

To clinch the match, No. 52 Mert defeated No. 70 Emma Staker, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 on court four.

On the remaining courts, No. 19 Julia Garcia Ruiz was closing in on a victory, 6-0, 3-6, 4-0, on court two and Catanzarite was in a tight three-set battle of her own, 6-2, 3-6, 3-4, on court five. Ounmuang was in control of her second set, 5-1, after falling 7-6 in the opening frame.

The Sooners will close out their three-match road swing on Friday, March 28, at Auburn before returning home on Sunday, March 30 to host Florida.
