EVANSTON, Ill. – The No. 12 Oklahoma women's tennis team (7-1) suffered a 4-2 loss to No. 2 Texas A&M (8-0) in the semifinals of the 2025 ITA National Team Indoor Championship on Monday night at Northwestern's Combe Tennis Center.
Following back-to-back top-10 wins, Monday marked the second time the Sooners reached the semifinals of ITA National Team Indoors since their inaugural appearance in 2022.
Facing early adversity once again, the Sooners dropped the doubles point for just the second time this season. Each court was tightly contested, but after 35 minutes the Aggies notched wins on courts one and two to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.
Finishing first, TAMU's Mia Kupres and Daria Smetannikov defeated no. 58 Julia Garcia Ruiz and Chloé Noël (6-4) on court two. Following closely behind, No. 47 Cara Mester and Alina Shcherbinina fell (6-4) to Mary Stoiana and Lucciana Perez at the top court, securing the opening point for the Aggies.
When play came to a halt, OU's Salakthip Ounmuang and Gloriana Nahum held a 5-4 advantage over Nicole Khirin and Jeanette Mireles on court three. The dynamic freshmen duo remains undefeated at 6-0 in dual play.
Both of Oklahoma's straight-set wins in singles came from seniors in the back-half of the lineup. On court six, No. 91 Ava Catanzarite secured the 6-2, 6-2 win against Lexington Reed. The senior from Pittsburgh, Pa., has yet to drop a set this spring as she improved her season dual record to 6-0. In similar fashion, Emma Staker capped a 3-0 week by knocking off No. 41 Perez (6-2, 6-2).
On the remaining courts, No. 43 Garcia Ruiz dropped to No. 3 Stoiana (6-4, 6-0) at the top spot, No. 43 Shcherbinina was defeated by No. 12 Khirin (6-4, 6-3) on court two and No. 103 Ounmuang suffered a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, loss to No. 101 Kupres on court three.
The Sooners will face their first true road test of the season as they open up SEC Conference play on Saturday, Feb. 22 at Arkansas. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT.
