Women's Tennis Advances to Regional Championship Round

NORMAN – The No. 17 Oklahoma women's tennis team swept San Diego State 4-0 Friday in its opening round match of the ITA Kickoff Weekend Cal Regional to advance to the championship dual.

The Sooners will face No. 14 California on Sunday at 3 p.m. CT, with the victor qualifying for the ITA National Indoor Championships in Illinois, Feb. 7-11.

The Sooners kicked off the match in doubles against the Aztecs. Finishing first, No. 30 Julia Garcia Ruiz and Chloé Noël beat out Vesa Gjinaj and Ninon Martinache 6-2 on court two. Following right behind, the dynamic freshmen doubles pair of Salakthip Ounmuiang and Gloriana Nahum defeated Jo-Yee Chan and Zoe Olmos on court three with the 6-4 win to clinch the doubles point for OU.

When play was halted at the top court, No. 28 Cara Mester and Alina Shcherbinina trailed 5-6 behind SDSU's Gloria Alogo and Liisa Varul.

Going into singles with the 1-0 advantage, No. 43 Shcherbinina met Alogo and delivered a quick 6-2, 6-0 win for the Sooners to extend their lead. Ounmuang joined Shcherbinina in the win column at the No. 3 spot to defeat Martinache, 6-2, 6-1. The freshman from Bangkok, Thailand, boasts a 3-0 singles record to start her career and has yet to drop a set.

To clinch the match for the Sooners, No. 66 Emma Staker delivered in her match to take the 6-2, 6-2 victory over Varul.

When play was halted, No. 14 Garcia Ruiz was in a stalemate on the top court with Chan, 6-1, 5-6. Meanwhile, Nahum was rallying in the second set, 5-7, 3-0, at the five spot and No. 68 Catanzarite led Gjinaj, 6-3, 5-1 on court six.
