NORMAN – The Oklahoma men's and women's track and field team wrapped up an impressive season opener Friday night at the Owen Hewett Invitational hosted in Mosier Indoor Facility. The Sooners secured 16 titles, one school record, 13 spots on OU's all-time performance list and 13 NCAA Indoor Championships qualifying marks.
"This track meet was a lot of fun. It's one thing to watch these young men and women work tirelessly during practice, but it's another to see so many performances that showcase their growth," praised Head Coach
James Thomas. "Champions aren't crowned in January, but there's no better time than now to keep development the right mindset."
The Sooners immediately turned heads during the first events of the invite section. In the women's triple jump, graduate student
Jasmine Akins broke the long jump school record with a PR of 6.47m (21'2.75") for first place.
Paige Low followed with another massive personal best of 17.31m (56'9.50") in the shot put for the fifth-best mark in the NCAA and second-best in the SEC.
The men's long jump crew continued to dominate with a first-place performance from graduate student
Nikaoli Williams. He recorded a 7.93m (26'0.25") jump, the best mark in the NCAA and SEC so far this season. Freshman
Nicolas Bersier notched himself in OU history with his PR of 7.64m (25'0.75") for the eighth-best jump in OU history.
Later in the evening,
Tucker Smith recorded a PR of 19.25m (63'2") in the men's shot put for first place. His mark accounted for the fourth-best in OU history, No. 3 in the SEC and No. 4 in the NCAA.
A few Sooners earned individual titles in the distance races. Graduate student
Gabe Medina took the men's mile title (4:12.59),
Grace Hanson secured the women's 3,000-meter run (10:24.63) and Josh Cherry won the men's 3,000m race (8:40.46).
Sprints duo of
Eva Kubickova and
Amanda Obijiaku finished first and second, respectively, with PRs of 7.34 and 7.37. Kubickova's time is tied for fifth in the SEC and helped her climb to No. 9 on OU's all-time indoor list.
The men's high jump group kept the momentum going. Sophomore
Kyren Washington recorded a massive personal best of 2.22m (7'3.25"), improving his spot in OU history to No. 2 and positioning himself as the nation's and Southeastern Conference's best high jumper.
Trey Bartholomew made his OU debut with a PR of 2.16m (7'1") for Oklahoma's tenth-best mark ever recorded in the event.
The Sooners' strong performance didn't stop there. In the women's triple jump,
Agur Dwol (13.48m),
Ashley Moore (13.19m) and
Eunice Ilunga Mbuyi (13.12m) recorded the third, fourth and fifth-best marks in OU history. Dwol also ranks No. 3 in the NCAA with her personal best.
Junior
Will Dibo competed for the first time as a Sooner and immediately made changes to OU's all-time list. His 19.77m (64'10.50") weight throw was the third best in Oklahoma history.
In the women's pole vault,
Olivia Lueking kicked off her senior season with a 4.40m (14'5.25") clearance for the NCAA's fourth-best pole vault.
Tessani Foster recorded a PR of 4.05m (13'3.50") to cement herself at No. 10 in OU's history books.
Junior
BJ Green returned to the runaway to secure first place in the triple jump with a 16.75m (54'11.50") leap, launching himself to No. 2 in OU history. Green is now ranked No. 1 in the nation and in the SEC in the triple jump.
