CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The No. 16 Oklahoma women's tennis team wrapped up play at the Miami Spring Invitational on Sunday, capturing 24 total wins on the weekend to lead a competitive field.
Competing in the annual spring tournament alongside OU was No. 23 Miami, No. 14 North Carolina State, and fellow SEC opponent No. 21 Vanderbilt.
On the first day, the Sooners notched six singles wins and three doubles wins to open the tournament. Senior No. 43 Alina Shcherbinina highlighted the opening round with a ranked win over Vanderbilt's No. 26 Bridget Stammel. A trio of freshmen kept the momentum going, as Salakthip Ounmuang, Gloriana Nahum and Cara Mester all picked up straight-set victories in their spring debut.
In doubles, three pairings found success. No. 28 Shcherbinina and Mester teamed up to win 6-2 over Raquel Gonzalez and Xinyi Nong (Miami). Then, Julia Garcia Ruiz and Ounmuang defeated Jaquelyn Ogunwale and Marina Paula Vargas (Miami), 6-2, while Chloé Noël and Nahum claimed the 6-1 win over Amy Stevens and Jayden Jagolinzer (Vanderbilt).
OU added four more wins in singles on the second day, paced by No. 14 Garcia Ruiz who earned her first win of the spring in split-set fashion against Miami's Ogunwale, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. Garcia Ruiz is coming off an impressive fall campaign that saw the junior advance to the semifinals of the NCAA Individual Championships for the first time in her career. The Morelia, Mexico native became the Sooners' first individual semifinalist since Layne Sleeth in 2023.
The Sooners grabbed two more doubles wins with Ounmuang and Garcia Ruiz winning 6-4 over No. 60 Krisitna Paskauskas and Jasmine Conway (NC State) and Catanzarite and Staker taking down Stevens and Jagolinzer (Vanderbilt), 6-2.
Oklahoma was successful on the final day of competition after walking away with five singles wins and sweeping four doubles wins. A pair of Sooner newcomers capped undefeated weekends, starting with Ounmuang who knocked off No. 55 Gabia Paskauskas (NC State), 6-1, 6-4, followed by Nahum who claimed the 6-4, 6-2 win over Mia Slama (NC State). The final three wins to close out the tournament came from Garcia Ruiz, Shcherbinina and Mester.
The Sooners will kick off the dual slate with back-to-back home matches against Wichita State and Wyoming at the Headington Family Tennis Center (Jan. 17).
