Sooners Fall to Vanderbilt, Face Tennessee Sunday

NORMAN – The Oklahoma men's tennis team (9-3; 1-2) fell short, 3-4, to Vanderbilt (10-3; 2-1) in a down-to-the-wire match at the Headington Family Tennis Center on Friday evening.

Oklahoma took a 3-0 lead after taking the doubles point and two singles wins. The Commodores went on to win four straight singles courts.

The Sooners got off to a hot start in doubles, only dropping six games across all three courts. Senior pair Luis Alvarez and Bruno Nhavene were dominant on court one and were first to turn in a result, 6-2. The primary pair was quickly followed by a win at the two line where sophomore Alejandro Melero and junior Hank Trondson teamed up to take a 6-1 win. With the doubles point belonging to the Sooners, the pair at the three spot stalled their match when they were ahead 5-3.

The dominance from doubles carried into singles where three first set wins belonged to Oklahoma. Alvarez along with sophomore Orel Kimhi and junior Asahi Harazaki all came out on top to take the edge over their opponents early on.

No. 49 Alvarez did not let up and was the first to complete a singles match. He won 6-3, 6-3 to extend his singles win streak to six matches. Alvarez's singles and doubles wins on the day improved his total win streak to eight matches.

Kimhi went to work at the three line and posted a 6-1, 6-2 win to put Oklahoma ahead 3-0 in the dual. Since his return to Norman after competing for Israel in the Davis Cup, has tallied three straight wins in Oklahoma's three conference matches.

Vanderbilt came back with two singles wins at the five and six spots to bring the match score to 3-2 while the Sooners held the narrow lead.

A hard-fought 4-6, 6-4, 5-7 loss by Johan Rodriguez on court four gave Vanderbilt another point, tying the match at three-games-all.

The last Sooner in the fight was No. 79 Oscar Lacides at the two position. After dropping the first set, he came back to win the second set, forcing a third set to begin. Lacides' opponent went ahead 5-2 but Lacides won two straight games to bring the score to 4-5. Despite tying the third set at five-games-all, Lacides fell short, 4-6, 6-4, 5-7.
