COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The four-seeded Oklahoma men's tennis team completed its run in the SEC Championships in a 4-3 battle in the quarterfinals of the tournament against five-seeded Texas A&M.
OU fell behind after dropping the doubles point but began singles with three quick first-set wins. The first Sooner to turn in a singles result was No. 109 Johan Rodriguez with a straight-set 6-1, 6-4 score to even the dual.
The Aggies pulled ahead with a win on court five when Alejandro Melero fell short in a three-set match, 5-7, 6-3, 3-6. The Sooners fell further behind when Asahi Harazaki lost sets two and three, 6-3, 4-6, 3-6.
Oklahoma trailed 1-3 but rallied to level the dual with wins coming in from courts one and three. No. 35 Luis Alvarez had an impressive comeback victory against No. 10 Theo Papamalamis after taking a loss against him in Sunday's regular-season finale against the Aggies. Alvarez's 6-3, 7-6(7) win pushed Oklahoma to a 2-3 score in the competition and set up sophomore Orel Kimhi to tie up the match from court three.
Kimhi came back swinging in the second and third sets after dropping set one in a close tiebreak, 6-7(8), 6-1, 6-3.
The match came down to a showdown on court two where No. 61 Oscar Lacides battled with No. 41 Kholo Montsi. Lacides dropped the first set but came back to win the second set in a tiebreaker. With a third and deciding set on the way, Lacides put up a fight but couldn't close out the match. The final score on court two was 4-6, 7-6(2), 3-6.
The Sooners look to the NCAA Championships and find out their seed in the tournament during the Selection Show on Monday, April 27, at 4 p.m. CT.
