Men's Tennis Sweeps No. 21 USC To Advance to NCAA Sweet Sixteen

May 02, 2026 | Men's Tennis

NORMAN -- The No. 9 Oklahoma men's tennis team is bound for the NCAA Sweet Sixteen after sweeping No. 21 USC in the championship match of the Norman Regional.

The back side of OU's singles lineup delivered yet another solid showing and sophomore Alejandro Melero delivered the clinching point inĀ a thrilling set tiebreak, 6-1, 7-6(5).

The Sooners are set to face No. 8 Arizona for the second time this season, this time in Tucson, Arizona. OU opened the season against then-No. 11 Arizona with a 4-2 upset victory at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

Oklahoma's path through the regional final began with another dominant doubles performance led by the No. 5 doubles duo in the country, Luis Alvarez and Bruno Nhavene. The seniors on court one topped the No. 51 Trojan team 6-2 and the OU pairingĀ Melero andĀ Oscar Lacides finished the job with a 6-3 result on court two.

With the doubles point in OU's hands, five of six singles courts claimed first-set advantages to keep the momentum going. Despite falling 3-6 in set one, No. 76 Oscar Lacides bounced back in the second set to force a deciding set at the two position. After freshman and No. 100 Johan Rodriguez put the first singles point on the board for OU, junior Asahi Harazaki inched the squad closer to the victory with a 6-3, 6-2 result from court six.

It was a race to the finish line as courts one, three and five all pushed to close out the match for OU. Melero won the race in a victorious tiebreaker at the five line, sealing the sweep over the top-25 Trojans.Ā

When play was stalled, No. 25 Alvarez led 6-3, 5-3, LacidesĀ was at 3-6, 6-3, 0-2 and No. 68 Orel Kimhi led 6-2, 5-2.
