TUCSON, Ariz. – The No. 9 Oklahoma men's tennis team fell short to No. 8 Arizona, 4-3, in the NCAA Tucson Super Regional, bringing the end to a stunning season.
Oklahoma took a 3-1 lead after winning the doubles portion of the match followed by two singles victories.
The deciding match came down to court one where No. 25 Luis Alvarez battled with No. 4 Jay Friend in a three-set thriller.
The Sooners started hot and picked up singles wins on courts one and two. The No. 5 pair of Luis Alvarez and Bruno Nhavene claimed the first win, 6-4, and the sophomore duo at the two line closed it out with another 6-4 result.
OU went up 2-0 after a speedy match from No. 100 Johan Rodriguez. The freshman earned his 19th singles win of the spring, 6-2, 6-1.
Arizona claimed its first point in singles when sophomore Alejandro Melero fell, 2-6, 2-6. On the front three courts, No. 25 Alvarez, No. 76 Oscar Lacides and No. 68 Orel Kimhi battled in set tiebreakers.
Lacides quickly came out on top, 7-6(1), to start his second set with a lead. Alvarez pushed his tiebreak to an extended 14 total points, but ultimately fell short, 6-7(6). Kimhi also began his second set in a deficit, 6-7(4).
The No. 76 sophomore moved swiftly in his second set, closing it out with a 7-6(1), 6-2 victory to put the third point up for Oklahoma.
OU held the lead as junior Asahi Harazaki recovered from losing the first set to win the second and force a deciding third set at the No. 6 singles line.
Kimhi pushed into yet another tiebreak in the second set, where he fell 6-7(4), 6-7(4) and Arizona made the score 3-2.
The Wildcats tied the match when Harazaki fell 4-6, 6-4, 4-6.
Alvarez won the second set in a 7-5 showing and went into a third and deciding set. No. 4 Friend came out on top and closed out the match, 6-7(6), 7-5, 0-6.
The Sooners ended the season with a 20-7 overall record and a 10-4 conference record. Oklahoma went on an eight-match win streak to cap off the regular season, earning the No. 4 seed in the SEC Championships.
Over the course of the season, OU earned 13 wins against ranked opponents, including seven against top-15 teams and three against top-5 programs.
