OU Tops No. 13 Northern Iowa in Back-and-Forth Dual

January 31, 2026 | Wrestling

NORMAN – The No. 21 Oklahoma wrestling team returned to the win column on Saturday night, edging No. 13 Northern Iowa, 23–18, in a back-and-forth dual at McCasland Field House.

The victory snapped a two-dual losing streak for the Sooners (9-4, 2-3 Big 12) and marked Oklahoma's highest-ranked home dual win since the 2016–17 season, when OU defeated fifth-ranked Missouri. The result was also the program's fifth ranked dual win under head coach Roger Kish.

The dual featured multiple momentum swings, with the teams trading leads throughout the night before Oklahoma pulled away in the final two bouts.

Leading off at 125, No. 26 Conrad Hendriksen notched a victory via injury default over No. 13 Trever Anderson to put the Sooners out in front early. Northern Iowa answered with a fall at 133, but OU quickly regained momentum as No. 26 Tyler Wells controlled his bout at 141 pounds, posting a 4-1 decision over Max Brady.

After the Panthers evened the dual at 149, redshirt freshman Layton Schneider delivered a win at 157 pounds, narrowly defeating RJ Weston, 3-2, to give Oklahoma a 12-9 advantage. UNI responded again at 165, knotting the score at 12-12 and setting the stage for a pivotal final four weights.

No. 8 Carter Schubert continued his breakout season at 174 pounds, earning his team-leading seventh ranked win of the season with a 5-1 decision over No. 12 Jared Simma. The win marked Schubert's second top-15 victory in as many nights, and he has now won 12 of his last 13 bouts dating back to Nov. 23 against Indiana.

Northern Iowa briefly reclaimed the lead at 184 via injury default before Oklahoma answered emphatically down the stretch. At 197 pounds, No. 11 DJ Parker delivered a dominant performance, recording a 14-2 major decision over John Gunderson to swing the dual back in Oklahoma's favor. No. 21 Juan Mora closed the night in electric fashion at heavyweight, securing a 16-4 major decision over Adam Ahrendsen for his seventh bonus-point victory of the season.

Oklahoma will remain at home next Sunday when it hosts Arizona State for Senior Day at McCasland Field House. The Sooners will honor eight seniors prior to the dual: Brian Soldano, Christian Forbes, DJ Parker, Eli Cordy, Jacob Zimmer, Juan Mora, Kaden Smith and Mannix Morgan.
