Freshmen Shine in Loss to Wyoming

February 15, 2026 | Wrestling

LARAMIE, Wyo. – Competing shorthanded on the road in a top-25 dual, the Oklahoma wrestling team suffered a 24-10 loss to Wyoming in its regular season finale Sunday afternoon inside the Uniwyo Sports Complex.

The No. 16 Sooners (10-6, 3-5 Big 12) earned victories at three weight classes in a losing effort to the surging No. 24 Cowboys (8-5, 7-1 Big 12). Oklahoma was led by a pair of true freshmen in Sebastian Degennaro (125) and Bryce Burkett (165), who each recorded their first career dual wins.

In a dual that began at 157 pounds, Burkett was the first to put points on the board for the Sooners in his 165-pound bout against Sloan Swan. The Watertown, Minn., native was tied 8-8 in the final minute of the third period before scoring a decisive escape with 30 seconds remaining – his third escape of the bout – to secure a 9-8 victory.

Following the halftime intermission, Degennaro took the mat for his first career dual appearance against Wyoming's Sefton Douglass. The Port St. Lucie, Fla., product previously faced Douglass at the Soldier Salute on Jan. 4, earning a first-period 15-0 technical fall. Sunday's matchup produced similar results, as Degennaro tallied a takedown, two three-point near falls, a stalling point and riding time to claim an 11-0 major decision. With the win, Degennaro improved to 9-2 on the season, with six victories coming by bonus points.

Oklahoma's final win came at 141 pounds, where No. 27 Tyler Wells earned a 7-4 decision over David Saenz. The junior has now won five of his last six bouts and improved to 14-7 on the season as the Minnesota transfer looks to qualify for his third NCAA Championships in March.

The Sooners will now prepare for the Big 12 championships, set to be held at the BOK Center in Tulsa on March 6-7. Tickets for the championships can be purchased online, and Sooner fans are encouraged to purchase tickets in section 122, which is the official OU section at the competition.
