LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Oklahoma redshirt sophomore Carter Schubert claimed the 174-pound title, and three additional Sooners earned podium finishes on the final day of the 44th Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Saturday inside the Westgate Hotel Paradise Event Center.
Schubert becomes Oklahoma's first CKLV champion since 2013, when Kendric Maple, Andrew Howe and Travis Rutt each won their respective weight classes. Along with Schubert's title, Brian Soldano placed third at 184 pounds, DJ Parker finished fourth at 197 and Tyler Wells secured fifth at 141.
As a team, the Sooners recorded 80.5 points to finish sixth – OU's highest placement at the event since the 2015 squad took fourth.
Schubert opened Saturday with a 2-1 semifinal win over South Dakota State's No. 24 Moses Espinoza-Owens. After the wrestlers traded escapes, the Marion, N.Y., native earned the decisive point through 1:08 of riding time in a defensive showdown.
In the finals, Schubert faced Navy's top-seeded and No. 7-ranked Danny Wask, an All-American last season. Schubert defended a strong single-leg attempt early in the first period before countering with his own attack, finishing a mat return for three points in the closing seconds of the opening frame. Wask cut the deficit with a second-period takedown, but Schubert answered with a pair of escapes to maintain the lead at 5-3. Wask escaped to start the third, but Schubert's stout defense shut the door, securing the 5-4 victory. The win marked Schubert's second top-10 victory of the season over a 2025 NCAA qualifier.
Soldano delivered another standout performance at 184 pounds. After falling in the semifinals to No. 7 Brock Mantanona (Michigan), the senior dominated Ohio's No. 31 Sal Perrine with a 16-1 tech fall in just 3:00. Set for a rematch with Eddie Neitenbach (Purdue) in the third-place bout, Soldano was awarded the victory via medical forfeit, giving him a podium finish in his CKLV debut as a Sooner.
At 197, Parker opened his day with a pair of ranked consolation wins – an 8-0 major decision over Purdue's No. 23 Ben Vanadia and a hard-fought 8-6 victory over West Virginia's No. 21 Rune Lawrence. He finished fourth after dropping a sudden-victory decision to Oregon State's No. 8 Justin Rademacher (9-6 SV-1).
Rounding out OU's podium performers, Wells rebounded from an opening-round loss to go 5-1 on the backside of the bracket. The junior capped his day with a 4-1 sudden-victory win over Oregon State's Nash Singleton, breaking a 1-1 tie with a decisive takedown.
The Sooners return home before heading east for back-to-back road duals against No. 13 Rutgers (Dec. 13) and Rider (Dec. 14). OU's matchup with Rutgers at Jersey Mike's Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT and will air on the Big Ten Network.
