LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The No. 19 Oklahoma wrestling team rolled through day one of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Friday at the Westgate Hotel Paradise Event Center, advancing four athletes to Saturday's action, highlighted by semifinal berths for Carter Schubert and Brian Soldano.
At 174 pounds, No. 7 seed Schubert continued his momentum from last week's dual win, cruising into the semifinals with three straight decision victories. The Marion, N.Y., native defeated Tanner Lofthouse (Utah Valley), Graham Gambrall (Oregon State) and Cash Stewart (Cal Poly), allowing just two points across the three matches. Schubert will face sixth-seeded Moses-Espinoza Owens of South Dakota State in Saturday's semifinal round.
Soldano, seeded fifth at 184 pounds, received a first-round bye before opening his tournament with a 9-6 victory over No. 12 seed James Rowley (Purdue). He then delivered one of the highlights of the day in the quarterfinals, countering an early takedown attempt with a reversal and pinning No. 4 seed Eddie Neitenbach (Wyoming) in just 20 seconds. The fall – his 30th career pin and second as a Sooner since transferring from Rutgers – secured his place in the semifinals.
The pair became Oklahoma's first semifinalists at the CKLV since Jake Woodley reached the final four at 197 pounds in 2021.
In the consolation bracket, junior Tyler Wells (141) and senior DJ Parker (197) remain in contention for podium finishes. Wells rebounded from an opening-round defeat with three straight wins, including two by major decision. Parker, now 7-2 on the season, dropped only a quarterfinal bout to Oregon State's No. 4 seed Justin Rademacher.
The Sooners sit in seventh place in the team standings with 47 points. No. 3 Iowa State leads the field with 107.5 points, followed by No. 24 Stanford (67.0), No. 18 West Virginia (65.5), Arizona State (56.0) and No. 15 Michigan (55.0).
Day two of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational begins Saturday, Dec. 7, with the championship and consolation semifinals, along with fifth and seventh-place bouts, at 12 p.m. CT. Finals and third-place matches are slated for 5 p.m. CT. All action will stream live on FloWrestling, with live stats available on FloArena.
