Guachino Earns 12th Victory as Sooners Clinch Series

AUSTIN, Texas — Freshman Kendall Wells not only hit the eventual game-winning three-run home run in the fifth inning but set the NCAA freshman single-season home run record as the Sooners (40-3, 13-1 SEC) defeated No. 4 Texas (32-6, 9-5 SEC), 4-3, Saturday, April 11.

Miali Guachino improved to 12-0 with six strikeouts in six innings of work and Audrey Lowry closed the door with her second save.

Wells' homer broke a three-way tie for the previous NCAA freshman single-season home run record, which was shared with OU legends, Lauren Chamberlain and Jocelyn Alo, as well as Hawaii's Kelly Majam.

Texas scored its first run of the weekend after a walk and a pair of singles through the infield made it 1-0 Longhorns in the first. Ailana Agabayani nabbed a line drive and doubled up the lead runner at second for an inning-ending double play.

Gabbie Garcia tied it up in the second inning with a solo shot to left field, her 17th homer of the season.

Miali Guachino tallied a pair of swinging strikeouts in the second and third inning, including fanning Texas' Katie Stewart and Reese Atwood in the third to strand a runner at second base.

Texas scrapped out a run in the fourth inning, using three infield singles to regain the lead. Leighann Goode laced a one-out single that Garcia sprawled out to stop before flipping to Agbayani to attempt to get her at first base.

Alisa Sneed legged out a bunt single that she was initially ruled out on and Jaycie Nichols chopped an RBI infield single to second base for the 2-1 lead.

Abby Dayton walked and Kai Minor singled to right before Wells' game-winning three-run homer off Texas' Citlaly Gutierrez. Wells fouled a pair of pitches off before taking a 2-2 delivery over 250 feet to left field in the fifth.

The Longhorns scored one in the bottom of the same inning thanks to two singles and an error, but Guachino retired the final four batters she faced.

Lowry took the ball in the bottom of the seventh and struck out Kayden Henry after being down 3-0 in the count. Katie Stewart singled to left but Lowry got Reese Atwood to ground into a game-ending 5-4-3 double play turned by Sydney Barker, Agbayani and eventually Isabela Emerling.
