Sooners Drop 8-6 Decision in Eight Innings, Still Take the Series

AUSTIN, Texas  — Despite an early 3-0 hole, the No. 2 Oklahoma Sooners (40-4, 13-2 SEC) rallied back to tie the game and eventually force extras, but No. 4 Texas (33-6, 10-5 SEC) was lifted by a pair of home runs in the eighth inning as OU was outlasted, 8-6, Sunday, April 12.

The Sooners tied the game in the seventh on a Gabbie Garcia two-run homer and took their first lead in the eighth before Texas won via a walk-off.

OU still claimed a series victory, its third road-series win against a ranked team this year.

Texas 8, OU 6 (8 inn.)
Kendall Wells roped a two-out single and Garcia walked, but Texas' starter Teagan Kavan stranded a pair. OU starter Sydney Berzon followed suit, stranding the bags loaded to keep things scoreless through one.

Texas' Kayden Henry hit a three-run home run to center to create the largest lead for either team on the weekend. Henry's homer sailed over the center field wall after an infield single from Jaycie Nichols and a roller up the middle from Kaydee Bennett.

OU got one back thanks to an Abby Dayton solo home run to right to leadoff the third inning. Kierston Deal took over with one out in the frame and fanned pinch hitter Victoria Hunter to keep the deficit at two.

The Sooners generated a two-out run in the fourth. Sydney Barker singled, took second on a wild pitch and moved up to third on a Dayton liner that was knocked down by Kavan. Minor hit a sharp grounder to Nichols at third base, who couldn't gather the ball, as Barker crossed home.

Berkeley Zache inherited two runners in the fifth and fanned Reese Atwood swinging to keep the deficit at 3-2.

The Longhorns brought their lead back to two with a Leighann Goode home run to deep left center in the bottom of the sixth inning.

OU got that run back in the sixth. Ailana Agbayani singled to left center, took second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a fly out from Barker. Dayton delivered the sac fly to center as OU cut the deficit in half.

Texas' home run production came through in the sixth with a Katie Stewart solo homer to left center.

Down to three outs, Ella Parker drove a double right center on a 3-2 pitch to start the frame. With one out, Garcia hit a towering two-run homer to right to tie things at 5-5.

Audrey Lowry took the ball in the bottom of the seventh and retired the Longhorns in order. The Sooners took their first lead of the game in the eighth after Barker's leadoff walk resulted in a run. She came around to score on a sharply hit Minor infield single over to Stewart at first base.

With Texas down its final three outs, freshman Hannah Wells lofted a fly ball into the wind that carried just feet over the wall in the left field corner. Stewart ended the game two batters later with a walk-off two-run homer to left.
