NORMAN – The No. 17 Oklahoma men's tennis team upset No. 14 Auburn SCORE on Friday evening at the Headington Family Tennis Center. The ranked win marked Oklahoma's fourth of the season and second straight upset victory.
Despite dropping the doubles point, the Sooner singles lineup came ready to compete and took four straight singles triumphs to seal the match. No. 58 Oscar Lacides clinched yet another match following his closing win over Texas in last week's statement win over the No. 3 Longhorns.
The Sooners came out of the gate quick in singles. Each of the six Sooners in singles held leads halfway through the first sets and five of the six would hold their leads to claim first set advantages.
First off the court was No. 108 Johan Rodriguez as he posted a dominant 6-0, 6-1 score to even the dual. Junior Asahi Harazaki pushed Oklahoma into the lead with a 6-1, 6-4 win at the six line.
With only two more singles wins needed for OU to clinch the match, No. 34 Luis Alvarez and Lacides looked to be the pair that would close out the dual.
Alvarez claimed a ranked victory over No. 40 Hamza Nasridinov with a 6-2, 6-4 result and Lacides followed closely behind to clinch the upset with a 6-2, 6-3 final to seal his second ranked win of the season.
Play continued on courts three and five where No. 86 Orel Kimhi and sophomore Alejandro Melero entered 10-point tiebreaks to decide their matches.
Melero fell short and Auburn claimed its only singles point of the evening while Kimhi won 6-4, 3-6, 10-5 to give the Sooners the fifth point.
Oklahoma faces Alabama in another home competition on Sunday, March 22 at noon for the annual International Match.
