NORMAN - Oklahoma volleyball knocked off defending national champion No. 12 Texas A&M in five sets Wednesday night, rallying from a 2-1 deficit to secure a 3-2 victory (17-25, 25-20, 20-25, 25-23, 15-11) at McCasland Field House.
The victory marked Oklahoma's first win over a ranked opponent at home since defeating No. 20 Tennessee on Sept. 29, 2024. The Sooners improved to 9-4 overall and 2-2 in SEC play, handing Texas A&M (10-6, 3-1 SEC) its first conference loss of the season.
Four Sooners finished with double-digit kills as Oklahoma totaled 62 on the night. After dropping the third set, OU held off a late Texas A&M rally in the fourth before taking control down the stretch of the decisive fifth set.Ā
"Volleyball is a game of momentum, and with such a short set to play in the fifth, getting off to a strong start is key," said head coach
Aaron Mansfield. "We talked about winning the game to eight and getting to eight first. We were able to do that and then we were able to sustain the lead. It was a little touch-and-go there at the end with some challenges, but I'm glad our team stayed focused and finished it off."
Sophomores
Tekoa Barnes and
Alyssa Flack joined junior Alaleh Flack with a team-high 15 kills apiece, while junior
Carley Butler added 13. Butler turned in a career-best performance with a .571 hitting percentage, committing just one error on 21 swings while adding five block assists.
"The first two sets,Ā Tekoa and Alaleh were just trying to find their ways and find ways to score," said Mansfield.Ā "They did a really good job of settling into the offense. Carley was really steady for all five sets and she continues to be a force in the middle. Alyssa took some really big swings for us in the second, third and fourth sets. We need everybody. It's an all hands on deck offense and "I'm just really proud of the group to grit out a win."Ā
Sophomore
Avaya Maga dished out 53 assists and added six digs, while sophomore
Aniya Warren led the defensive effort with 12 digs.Ā
"It doesn't matter the name across the front of the jersey," said Warren. "We know who we are, and when we play our style of volleyball, we can beat anyone."
