ATHENS, Ga. ā Despite a strong first set and 18 kills from sophomore
Tekoa Barnes, Oklahoma volleyball fell to Georgia 3-1 (25-20, 17-25, 18-25, 23-25) Sunday afternoon at Stegeman Coliseum.
The Sooners (8-4, 1-2 SEC) opened the match with a convincing first-set victory but could not maintain their early momentum as Georgia (11-2, 3-0 SEC) rallied to take the next three frames. Oklahoma finished with 48 kills and a .138 hitting percentage, while the Bulldogs recorded 41 kills on .184 hitting. Georgia added 14 blocks and 13 service aces.
Barnes led the Oklahoma offense with 18 kills and added three service aces. Junior
Alaleh Tolliver followed with 10 kills, while junior
Carley Butler contributed eight kills on .357 hitting. Senior
Elise Hani added seven kills on a team-best .385 clip.
Sophomore
Avaya Maga finished with 42 assists and seven digs, while sophomore
Aniya Warren led the Sooners defensively with 11 digs.
SET ONE
Oklahoma established control early, jumping out to a 7-2 lead before extending its advantage to 13-5. Barnes helped power the offense and added two late service aces to give the Sooners a 24-17 advantage. Tolliver delivered the final kill to secure the 25-20 victory.
SET TWO
The teams traded points early before a double block from
Alyssa Flack and Butler gave Oklahoma a 10-7 lead. Georgia worked back to even the score and used a seven-point run to turn a 14-all tie into a 21-14 advantage. The Bulldogs maintained control to take the set 25-17 and even the match.
SET THREE
Oklahoma used a four-point run to build an early 8-5 lead, but Georgia responded to tie the set at eight. The Bulldogs moved ahead midway through the frame and used a four-point stretch to extend their advantage to 20-15 before closing out the set 25-18.
SET FOUR
The final frame remained competitive, with neither team able to create much separation. Oklahoma overcame a late deficit to take a 22-21 lead on a
Mikala Young kill, but Georgia scored three consecutive points to reach match point. Hani kept the Sooners alive before the Bulldogs secured the 25-23 victory.
LOOKING AHEAD
Oklahoma returns to Norman for a pair of SEC matches, beginning Wednesday against No. 14 Texas A&M before hosting No. 8 Texas on Sunday.
