Sooners Take on Tough Field at Gopher Invitational

NORMAN – Oklahoma men's golf plays its second event of the fall this weekend, teeing off at the 2nd Swing Gopher Invitational on Sunday morning. The 54-hole event features 15 teams playing 36 holes Sunday before a final round Monday to determine team and individual champions.
Led by first-year head coach Jonathan Moore, Oklahoma returns to Windsong Farm Golf Club for the first time since the 2019 Gopher Invitational as it looks for its first win of the Moore era. The Sooners have won the team title at the Gopher three times, claiming championships in 2015, 2016 and 2018.
The Sooners' lineup features one change from their 10th-place finish at the Inverness Intercollegiate, with Clark Van Gaalen moving into the starting five in place of PJ Maybank III, who will compete as an individual. Ryder Cowan, fresh off a fourth-place finish at Inverness, will lead the Sooners, followed by true freshman Lucas Gimenez, Bradley Sawka, Van Gaalen and Cayse Morgan.
Three additional Sooners – Cameron Cheek, Preston Albee and Matthew Troutman – will compete individually at the Minnesota Classic at Pioneer Creek.
LAST TIME OUT
In its first event under head coach Jonathan Moore, Oklahoma men's golf finished tied for 10th at the Inverness Intercollegiate on Tuesday at Inverness Club. The Sooners finished at 24-over par in a field that featured seven ranked teams. Oklahoma posted the second-lowest round of the tournament in Monday's second round, carding a 5-under-par 279, but opening and closing rounds of 300 (+16) and 297 (+13), respectively, kept the Sooners from challenging for the top five in their season opener.
Preseason All-American Ryder Cowan paced the Sooners, finishing fourth at even par. Cowan carded rounds of 73-67-73 to earn the 10th top-five finish of his career. The low amateur at the 2026 U.S. Open, Cowan's second-round 67 marked the 37th round in the 60s of his career, moving him into the top 10 in program history.

Windsong Farm is consistently rated among Minnesota's top golf courses, with additional national recognition as one of the top modern courses in the nation. Originally created by John Fought and Minnesota native Tom Lehman, the course's breathtaking views and unmatched conditions contribute to the ultimate golfing experience.
FORMAT
The Gopher Invitational will follow a 54-hole format, playing 36 holes on Sunday and 18 on Monday. Teams will begin first-round play with a 7:15 a.m. CT shotgun start Sunday, with the second round beginning immediately after round one on Sunday. The third and final round will begin at 7:15 a.m. CT on Monday.
