NORMAN — Despite falling behind 3-0 and enduring a late two-run home run, No. 1/1 Oklahoma (46-6, 18-3 SEC) rallied behind four two-out RBIs and some gutsy pitching from
Miali Guachino as the Sooners defeated No. 11/15 Georgia, 6-5, to sweep the series Sunday, April 26.
Fast forwarding to a 5-5 ball game in the sixth, sophomore shortstop
Gabbie Garcia turned on an inside pitch to hit the eventual game-winning home run to the seats in right. Guachino, who entered in the fifth, worked around two Georgia (34-16, 10-11 SEC) singles in the seventh to secure the win.
The Sooners held a postgame ceremony as part of Senior Day, honoring
Ailana Agbayani,
Sydney Berzon,
Abby Dayton,
Kierston Deal and
Isabela Emerling.
Oklahoma 6, Georgia 5
Deal dealt three-straight groundouts in the first inning to open her first start in SEC play this season. OU coaxed three walks in the first frame, but UGA's Addisen Fisher worked out of the jam.
A leadoff walk came around to bite in the second inning, extending a frame in which Georgia tallied four singles to create a 3-0 lead. It was Georgia's first lead of the series up to that point.
OU responded with a pair of runs thanks to a two-out RBI single into right center from
Ella Parker.
Ella Parker plated
Abby Dayton and
Kai Minor who reached on a walk and fielding error respectively earlier in the inning.
Allyssa Parker took the ball in the third and retired five consecutive batters before the Sooners grabbed the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Dayton worked a leadoff walk and
Kai Minor golfed a two-run home run to the first row of the left-center bleachers.
Ella Parker continued the frame with a double to right field and Garcia plated her with a two-out RBI single through the right side.
UGA answered right back, tying the game in the fifth on a two-run home run from Sarah Gordon just over the outstretched arm of
Ella Parker in right field.
After OU ended its own bottom of the fifth with runners on, Guachino did the same to Georgia, fanning a pair to help strand runners at the corners after they reached on hit by pitch and fielding error.
Garcia broke the tie with a solo home run to right with a two-out solo shot 211-feet out to the right field seats. She would proceed the close out the game with an unassisted-sliding grab and tag of second base to force out a Georgia runner and strand two in the seventh.
