WEEKEND REWIND
Non-conference play wrapped up with a 1-1 week as the Sooners split a pair of matches with Central Arkansas. On Sept. 18, the Sooners swept the Sugar Bears in Norman, behind a dominant 25-8 third set. A .363 team hitting percentage, nine blocks and nine service aces contributed to a balanced performance and
Kamille Gibson had a career night with five aces. In the second meeting of the weekend, it was the Sugar Bears who came out on top in a five-set battle. Despite a strong opening frame that saw the Sooners serve up nine aces, OU struggled offensively throughout the remainder of the match. Down 2-1, OU forced a set five but fell short.
HOT START
The Sooners 8-2 start to the 2025 season is one of their best starts since 1997. This is the sixth time since 1996 that an OU squad has finished non-conference play with two or fewer losses and the seventh time with a winning percentage of .800 or higher in non-conference action. OU has gone 8-1 through its first nine games five times since 1996.
THE KELLI JO SHOW
Redshirt junior
Kelli Jo Burgess is quietly having the best season of her career. In 2024, Burgess tallied 78 kills in 21 matches and just one match with more than 10 kills. This season, Burgess has 76 kills through the first 10 games and three double-digit performances. The Lehi, Utah, native, hit .238 in 2024 and is hitting .467 with just 12 errors on 137 attempts for OU this year. Burgess has six games with a hitting percentage over .500 and seven games over .350. If she can keep up her current pace and reach a minimum of 200 attempts, Burgess could set the OU single-season record for hitting percentage. On the defensive side, Burgess has tallied 39.0 blocks through ten games, matching her output through 10 games from a season ago. Her 8.0 blocks against Saint Mary's on Sept. 13 tied her career high set in 2024. Burgess is the current leader in blocks, averaging 1.03 per set.
ACES ARE HIGH
On Sunday, Sept. 21, the Sooners set a program record with 14 aces in a five-set match. Nine of the 14 came in the first set alone as
Harper Hall recorded five in a row. The previous record in a five-set match was 13 in 2014 against CSUN. Fourteen aces are the most recorded in an OU match of any length in the 25-point rally scoring era.
IN THE RECORD BOOKS
On Sept. 18,
Kamille Gibson added her name to the record books as she recorded five aces against Central Arkansas in a three-set victory. Gibson is now the fourth Sooner to tally five aces in a three-set match in the 25-point rally scoring era.
Alexis Shelton climbed into the top 10 in career kills as she currently sits at 1,250. The senior is now No. 10 all-time and needs 51 to take over the next spot. The senior is currently 503 kills away from the top five, but only 170 from top six. With an average of 3.47 kills/set, Lex is on pace to break the top six by seasons end.
SET IT UP
Freshman
Avaya Maga has made an immediate impact at setter for the Sooners, notching seven 20-plus assist games on the year, and one 30-plus assist game. Maga tallied a season and career high 31 assists against FSU on Sept. 10 and currently has 241 on the season. Sophomore
Harper Hall has been sharing the duties at setter and has notched 20 assists in five games this season, including a season high 24. Hall has tallied 183 assists on the year.
TERRIFIC TEKOA
Freshmen
Tekoa Barnes had a breakout match against St. Mary's on Sept. 12, recording an impressive .524 hitting percentage with a career high 14 kills. The Boynton Beach, Fla., native broke double-digit kills for the first time in her career and tallied the second highest hitting percentage on the team in the game. Against Central Arkansas on Sept. 21, Barnes had her second double-digit kill match of the year with 11 kills.
SERIES HISTORY
LSU: The Tigers lead the all-time series, 10-3, but eight of the wins came before the millennium. OU and LSU have met just twice in the last 25 years, including last year's matchup in Baton Rouge. Friday marks the first trip to Norman for the Tigers since 1991 and fourth overall. LSU has won nine meetings in a row between the two teams.
OLE MISS: The Sooners lead the all-time series with the Rebels, 3-0. Before last year's conference matchup in Oxford, the two teams had not faced each other since 1993. This will be the second trip to Norman in program history for Ole Miss. Last season, the Sooners won a five-set thriller.
LOOKING AHEAD
The first conference road trip of the season is nearing as the Sooners will travel to Vanderbilt for the first meeting between the two squads in program history. That match is set for Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. CT. OU travels to Missouri for a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. CT on Oct. 5. This will be OU's first time to Columbia, Mo., since 2011.
