NORMAN – The Oklahoma volleyball team dropped a four-set match to Auburn, 21-25, 25-19, 20-25, 17-25, Sunday afternoon inside McCasland Field House.
The loss dropped the Sooners to 12-8 on the year with a 4-6 mark in conference play. Auburn improved to 15-6, 6-4 with the win.
Alexis Shelton and
Kamille Gibson led the Sooners with 13 kills apiece, while
Emoni Bush added 11. The trio were also strong defensively, as Bush tallied nine digs, Gibson recorded seven and Shelton tallied six with four blocks.
Avaya Maga had her second consecutive 40-assist match with 42 on the day for a career high. The freshman also added eight digs, two aces and one block.
Kelli Jo Burgess led the defense with four blocks and chipped in six kills.
Auburn took the opening frame, using a 7-1 run to close out the set 25-21. The Sooners led 15-12 at the media timeout and pushed their lead to five at 18-13 off a pair of Gibson kills. The Tigers made it a one-point game at 20-19 before tying it on a Shelton error. Errors plagued the Sooners late as Auburn took a 1-0 lead.
OU responded with a strong 25-19 win in the second set to even the match. Hitting .310 in the frame, the Sooners were led by five kills apiece from Bush and Shelton. A 6-1 run early put the Sooners ahead 13-4, forcing Auburn to call both timeouts before either team reached 15 points. A kill from Bush had OU in front 21-15 before a run from the Tigers made it 21-19. Out of the final timeout of the set, OU used a 4-0 run to clinch the win.
The Tigers went back in front after taking the third set, 25-20. Down 3-1, the Sooners used a 4-0 run to pull ahead before falling behind 15-11 at the media timeout. The Sooners got within two of the Tigers late at 20-18 before a 4-1 run by the Tigers gave Auburn a 2-1 advantage in the match.
The fourth set was tightly contested to the media timeout with Auburn holding a one-point lead. Out of the timeout, the Tigers took a 19-14 lead and the Sooners couldn't close the deficit, dropping the final set 25-17.
OU will host Arkansas on Wednesday, Oct. 29, at 6 p.m. CT inside the Field House. The match will air on SEC Network.
