NORMAN – Four players reached double-digit kills, and the Oklahoma volleyball team notched 11.5 blocks as the Sooners took down Arkansas 3-1 Wednesday night inside McCasland Field House.
The Sooners (13-8, 5-6 SEC) snapped a five-match losing skid with the 22-25, 25-21, 25-23, 27-25 victory over the Razorbacks (5-17, 1-10 SEC).
Alexis Shelton led the team with 22 kills on a .378 clip, while adding nine digs, three blocks and the game-winning ace. Emoni Bush notched her second double-double of the season with 18 kills and 10 digs, to go with three blocks.
Kamille Gibson and Kelli Jo Burgess tallied 10 kills, while helping to power the defense. Burgess tied her career high with nine blocks, while Gibson set her career high with six.
Avaya Maga and Harper Hall split setting duties with Maga notching 33 assists and Hall adding 22 to go with nine digs. Dionii Fraga added eight assists and nine digs as the starting libero.
Arkansas took a 1-0 lead after the first set. The Razorbacks held a one-point lead at the media timeout. A kill from Gibson tied the frame at 15-all before a 4-1 Razorback run pushed the score to 19-16. The Sooners kept it close, pulling within one at 21-20, but Arkansas held on to take the opener, 25-22.
OU bounced back with a 25-21 win in the second set. A 6-1 run gave the Sooners an early 8-3 advantage, but Arkansas responded with a 7-2 stretch to even things at 10-10. The Razorbacks briefly took the lead before back-to-back kills from Bush put OU back on top, 13-12. The Sooners led 15-13 at the media timeout and later used a 5-0 surge to extend their advantage to 21-15. Arkansas cut the deficit to three, but a block from Bush and Burgess gave OU set point and Bush sealed it with her 10th kill of the night.
The Sooners took a 2-1 match lead with a 25-23 win in the third. OU led 15-13 at the media timeout behind five kills from Shelton. A 4-0 Razorback run gave Arkansas a 17-16 edge before an error tied things at 17-all. The teams traded points down the stretch, with neither side leading by more than one. Shelton's 18th kill gave OU set point at 24-23, and a Razorback error clinched the frame for the Sooners.
The fourth set was tightly contested early, with Arkansas holding a narrow 15-14 lead at the media timeout. Out of the break, a 5-0 run pushed the Sooners back in front. The Razorbacks answered with a 4-0 run to even the score at 19-all, but an Arkansas error gave OU the lead once again. Back-to-back kills from Gibson and Burgess extended the advantage to 23-21. Burgess notched her 10th kill of the night to set up match point, but Arkansas rallied to tie it at 24-24. The Razorbacks fought off multiple match points, but Shelton closed the door with a kill followed by an ace to secure the victory.
OU will have the weekend off before returning to the court on Wednesday, Nov. 5, against Mississippi State inside McCasland Field House.
