NORMAN – High powered offense and a stuffing defense led the Oklahoma volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of Abilene Christian Saturday afternoon inside Moody Coliseum in Abilene, Texas.
The Sooners closed out the Wildcat Classic with a perfect 3-0 mark, the second time under head coach
Aaron Mansfield OU opened the season 3-0.
OU hit .321 on the day while holding ACU to just .039. The Sooners notched eight service aces and added 10 blocks in their second sweep of the weekend.
Senior
Alexis Shelton led the offense with 13 kills on a .480 clip. Junior
Kelli Jo Burgess had a phenomenal performance, hitting .700 with no errors and adding a team-high five blocks. Senior
Emoni Bush hit .400 on the day to go with two aces, three digs and two blocks.
Freshman
Avaya Maga notched 19 assists and seven digs, while
Harper Hall tallied 13 assists. Junior
Dionii Fraga added eight digs to lead the squad.
The Sooners dominated the first set, 25-15, hitting .407 as a team with five aces. Burgess notched four kills on four swings to power the offense in the opening frame. After a signature triple block by the Sooners, ACU called timeout with OU up 12-7. The Sooners pushed their lead to 19-11 and ended the set on a 3-0 run, capped off by Bush's second ace of the match.
Shelton powered the offense in the second set, notching eight kills and hitting .889. OU hit an impressive .579 with 13 kills to take the set 25-16. ACU took an 11-10 lead early on, but a 6-0 run by the Sooners gave them a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Shelton tallied three-straight kills to force an ACU timeout at 19-12.
Whitney Wallace used an ace to cap off a 3-0 run and clinch the set.
OU closed out the match with a 25-20 third set victory. The defense was the star in the final set as the Sooners recorded 3.5 blocks, including a solo block from
Kamille Gibson. The Sooners also notched 14 of their 24 total digs in the final set. OU took an 18-12 lead, but the Wildcats fought back to pull within four at 22-18. ACU fought off match point, but a service error gave OU the match.
LOOKING AHEAD
Oklahoma returns to action next weekend at the Wooo Pig Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. The Sooners will face Tulsa on Friday, Sept. 5, and Cal Poly on Saturday, Sept. 6. The home opener is slated for Wednesday, Sept. 10, against Florida State.
