NORMAN – The Oklahoma volleyball team dropped a four-set match to Tulsa, 25-15, 20-25, 16-25, 23-25, Friday night inside Barnhill Arena in Fayetteville, Ark.
The Sooners (3-1) were led offensively by
Emoni Bush and
Alexis Shelton with 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Bush added two aces, three digs and two blocks, while Shelton hit .393 for the night.
Kelli Jo Burgess added eight kills on a .538 clip, with three assists and three blocks.
Kamille Gibson also added eight kills to go with two blocks.
Avaya Maga notched 18 assists, while
Harper Hall added 15.
Dionii Fraga tallied a team-best 14 digs and
Whitney Wallace recorded seven. From the service line,
Sydney Thompson added three service aces.
The Sooners cruised to a 25-15 victory in the first set, hitting .321 in the opening frame. After taking an early 7-4 lead behind four straight points from Bush, the Sooners never looked back as they forced a Tulsa timeout at 10-5. Out of the timeout, OU extended its lead to 19-11 and closed the set on a 5-1 run.
The Golden Hurricane (3-2) took set two, 25-20, and set three, 25-16, to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
OU fell behind 7-0 in the fourth but came all the way back to take the lead at 19-18. Tulsa retook the lead on a 3-0 scoring run to force a timeout at 21-19. A Tulsa error allowed the Sooners to close the gap at 23-22 before a service error set up match point. OU fought off set point but fell short of completing the comeback.
The Sooners will face Cal Poly tomorrow to wrap up play at the Wooo Pig Invitational.
