Men's Tennis Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader

NORMAN – The No. 12 Oklahoma men's tennis team swept both Air Force and Oral Roberts in front of home crowds at the Headington Family Tennis Center on Saturday.

No. 12 OKLAHOMA 7, AIR FORCE 0

To begin the doubleheader match day, Oklahoma took two wins in doubles to secure the doubles point. The Sooners debuted a new doubles pairing of freshmen Oscar Lacides and Vojtech Petr. The duo won at the three spot, 6-3, followed by sophomore Kholo Montsi and junior Luis Alvarez clinching the doubles point at the one line, 6-3. Freshman Alejandro Melero and sophomore Asahi Harazaki were trailing 4-5 in their match when doubles play stalled.

Singles play began with four Sooners pulling ahead, each gaining leads by at least two games.

Harazaki was first to begin a second set, taking a 6-2 win in the first set. Lacides was soon to follow, heading into the second set with a 6-3 first-set score. Alvarez and Hasson also went into their second sets with advantages, Alvarez leading 6-2 and Hasson leading 6-3.

Melero and Montsi each had competitive first sets, with Montsi seeing a 4-4 tie and Melero facing a five-all score. Montsi pulled ahead and won the set, 6-4 to begin the second set with an advantage. Melero went to a set tiebreak and won, 7-6(3).

Lacides took the second set in stride, winning 6-3, 6-0 to give the Sooners their first singles point. Harazaki put Oklahoma at 3-0 following a 6-2, 6-2 win at the six spot.

Senior Jordan Hasson clinched the match 4-0 for OU with a 6-3, 6-2 win at the four line.

The last Sooners on court were Alvarez and Montsi. Montsi took a 6-4, 6-3 win to put Oklahoma at 6-0 in the match. Alvarez was tied at five-games-all in the second set and went to a second-set tiebreaker before finishing the match 6-2, 7-6(2) to cement the 7-0 win for the Sooners.

To close out the doubleheader, the Sooners took the doubles point with wins at the two and three spots. Petr and Lacides won their match 6-0 and Harazaki and Melero won their match 6-3. When doubles play was abandoned, Alvarez and Montsi's match was stalled as they were leading 4-3.

Singles sets got off to quick starts and five Sooners took 6-1 first-set wins. The last Sooner to begin a second set was Hasson, who went into the second set with a 6-3 advantage.

Melero gave Oklahoma their first point in singles after winning 6-1, 6-0. Alvarez won his match 6-1, 6-1 before Harazaki clinched the win with a 6-1, 6-0 score at the five line. Petr was soon to follow with a fourth singles win for OU, winning 6-1, 6-2. Hasson completed his match with a 6-3, 6-2 win and Lacides gave the Sooners their final point of the match with a 6-1, 7-5 victory.

The Sooners head to San Diego for their first road trip of the season where they take on the Toreros on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 2 p.m.
