Sooners Sweep Regionals, Claim Three Qualifying Spots for NCAA Individual Championships

NORMAN – The Oklahoma men's tennis team completed their run at the ITA Regional Championship, sweeping the tournament to come away with the singles co-champion titles and the doubles champion title. The Sooners claimed all three NCAA Individual Championship qualifying spots.

Freshman Oscar Lacides qualified for the NCAA Individual Championships after going undefeated at the tournament and claiming the title of co-champion with teammate Jordan Hasson. He won 10 matches over four days and dropped just one set over the duration of the tournament.

Senior Hasson advanced to the final without losing a set. He played eight matches over the course of four days and has a career record of 15-1 in singles at the ITA Regional Championships.

The Sooners also saw a doubles team qualify for the NCAA Individual Championship, as Lacides and partner Bruno Nhavene blazed through the doubles draw and picked up four wins on their way to the finals. They won a Bedlam battle over Oklahoma State's Isaac Becroft and Alessio Basile, 6-2, 6-3 to claim their fifth win of the tournament and punch their ticket to the NCAA Individual Championship. The newcomer pair are 8-0 for the fall season.

Junior Luis Alvarez advanced to the semifinals of the singles draw, only losing to teammate Lacides. He picked up seven total wins between singles and doubles at the tournament.

Other Sooners competing in the singles draw included freshman Vojtech Petr, sophomores Kholo Montsi, Hank Trondson and Asahi Harazaki and junior Nhavene. Petr dropped his match in the round of 64 but advanced to the semifinals of the consolation draw, while Montsi advanced to the round of 32 before falling short to Memphis's Michael Kouame, 5-7, 1-6.

Trondson also came up short in his round of 64 match but advanced to the round of 16 in the consolation draw.

Harazaki won his match in the round of 64 but dropped his match in the round of 32 to Leandro Zgraggen of North Dakota, 6-7(5), 5-7. Nhavene saw success in the singles draw, where he advanced to the quarterfinals before losing to Memphis's Kouame, 4-6, 1-6.

Alvarez, Montsi and Harazaki are still eligible to qualify for the NCAA Individual Championships at the ITA Sectional Championship from November 7-10. The NCAA Individual Championships will be hosted by Baylor from November 19-24.
