David Payne came to OU as a Doctoral candidate in 2003. He returned to school after working nearly 18 years as a minister for churches in Oklahoma, Georgia, Missouri, Indiana, and Kentucky. He has degrees from Southwest Baptist University, Southern Seminary, and the University of Oklahoma. While completing his coursework at OU, he worked as a student at the Athletics I.T. help desk. His previous leadership experience combined with his interest in technology helped elevate him from a student employee at the help desk to the director of I.T. He has worked for the University of Oklahoma for almost 20 years. He oversees the Information Technology operations and helps guide the technology strategies and initiatives within the department.
Professionally, he has served as a member of the Advisory Board and steering committee with other sports technology professionals for the Sports and Entertainment Alliance in Technology – SEAT. Along with a few of his peers at other college athletics programs, he helped build a peer network where almost 70 to 80 peers from other schools collaborate on similar issues and problems regularly. He helped lead the first stadium deployment of 802.11 AX (full stadium WiFi 6) in the world. He has overseen the development of a singular CRM, business intelligence and data analytics platform, various technology infrastructure projects, and regularly gets the opportunity to integrate some of the latest technological tools being used in the world of sports and entertainment.
David enjoys cycling, chili and craft beer. He considers himself a learner for life and often shares his favorite quote by philosopher Eric Hoffer – “In times of drastic change, learners inherit the earth, while the learned find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists.”
David and his wife Gina have one adult son, Andrew, who is married and lives in Arizona.
