NORMAN – The No. 7 Oklahoma women's tennis team capped its regular season in style Sunday, defeating No. 6 Texas, 4-2, at the Headington Family Tennis Center. The victory marked the Sooners' 13th consecutive win and secured a share of the SEC regular season title for the first time as a member of the conference.
With the win, the Sooners improve to 23-4 overall and 13-2 in SEC play, finishing the regular season with eight top-25 victories, including six over top-10 opponents. Oklahoma also earned its second win over Texas this season after a 4-3 victory in the opening round of the ITA Indoor Championships in February.
Prior to the match, Oklahoma honored seniors Julia Garcia Ruiz and Oyinlomo Quadre as part of Senior Day festivities.
Oklahoma opened strong in doubles, earning the opening point. After Texas got the win at court two, Garcia Ruiz and Salakthip Ounmuang secured a 6-4 win over Eszther Meri and Mathilde Ngijol-Carre at the No. 3 position, improving to 19-2 together and extending their winning streak to 11 matches.
The nation's top-ranked duo of Roisin Gilheany and Gloriana Nahum clinched the point with a 7-6 (5) win over Anastasia Abbagnato and Elizabeth Ionescu at the No. 1 spot. The pair finished the regular season a perfect 5-0 together in dual play.
In singles, No. 64 Garcia Ruiz gave Oklahoma a 2-0 lead with a dominant 6-2, 6-0 win over Christasha McNeil at court three, marking her fourth consecutive singles victory.
Texas responded with a win at the No. 4 position to cut the lead to 2-1, before Nahum extended Oklahoma's advantage to 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Kate Mansfield at court six. The win improved Nahum to 13-1 in singles this spring.
The Longhorns answered again at the top position, pulling within one with a straight-set win at court one.
Freshman Edda Mamedova delivered the clinching point for the Sooners at court two, earning a 7-6 (4), 6-4 victory over No. 50 Eszther Meri. The win marked Mamedova's fourth ranked singles victory of the season and improved her to 12-5 in singles play this spring.
The match on court five went unfinished following the clinch.
Oklahoma will host the SEC Tournament next week at the Headington Family Tennis Center, beginning Wednesday, April 15. Tournament seeds and the full schedule will be available in the coming days.
