SANTA ANA PUEBLO, N.M. ā Oklahoma women's golf captured the team championship at the NB3 Matchplay event on Wednesday at Twin Warriors Golf Club, posting 10 points to claim its second team title of the season.
The Sooners defeated New Mexico and New Mexico State, 4-1, in the first two rounds before tying NC State, 2.5-2.5, in the championship match. Oklahoma finished atop the team standings with 10 points, edging NC State (9.5). New Mexico finished third with 5.5 points, while New Mexico State placed fourth with 4.5.
"Really proud of this group and the way they competed all week," head coach
Veronique Drouin-Luttrell said. "We faced some tough conditions with the rain and wind, and today against a really good NC State team, we showed a lot of fight from start to finish. All five players in our lineup contributed this week, and all five found a way to win at least one match. To finish it the way Audrey did on 18 was special and a great reflection of this team. Winning a title like this gives us a lot of confidence and momentum as we head into the rest of the fall."
In Wednesday's championship match against the Wolfpack, the Sooners fell behind early after
Meg Tilma was defeated 6&5.
Satonkan (Earn) Thiengsri evened the match with a 2&1 victory over Lindsay McGrath.
Nancy Cox appeared to have the momentum after an eagle on the 16th gave her a 1-up lead over Giulia Foresta, but Foresta won the final two holes to take the match and put Oklahoma's title hopes in jeopardy.
Anna Kate Nichols answered with a wire-to-wire 2&1 victory over Marie Madsen, who entered the event ranked No. 24 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. With Nichols' and Thiengsri's points on the board, the Sooners needed just a half-point from
Audrey Rischer to clinch the championship.
Rischer was 2-down through eight holes against Ellie Hildreth and remained 1-down through 15 before mounting a comeback. The junior birdied the 16th to square the match, but Hildreth reclaimed the lead by winning the 17th.
On the final hole of the week, Rischer striped her drive down the middle of the fairway while Hildreth lost her tee shot and was assessed a penalty. Rischer won the 18th hole to halve the match and secure the championship for the Sooners.
The championship match was set up by Oklahoma's dominant 4-1 victories over New Mexico and New Mexico State in the first two rounds.
Thiengsri went 3-0 on the week with a plus-seven hole differential, while the rest of Oklahoma's lineup, excluding Rischer (1-1-1), finished 2-1.
The Sooners continue the fall slate Oct. 5-6 at the PD Intercollegiate at Wichita Country Club in Wichita, Kan.Ā
