OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma fell in the series opener to Tennessee Thursday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, 9-7.
An explosive game from the start, Oklahoma (31-19, 13-15 SEC) set a season high with 17 hits in the contest, belting three home runs. Of the Volunteers (36-18, 14-14) seven hits, a pair went for home runs.
OU built a 3-0 lead early, starting with Jason Walk leading off the bottom of the first with his third home run of the season.
Tennessee went in front in the third, scoring four runs on a pair of doubles, a single and sacrifice fly to chase OU starter Cameron Johnson, who surrendered four runs on four hits with five walks and five strikeouts.
OU tied the game on a Deiten Lachance homer in the home half of the third, his third straight game with a home run and ninth of the season, all coming in OU's last 18 games.
The Sooners retook the lead in the fourth on Walk's second RBI of the game, a sac fly to score Kyle Branch.
The Vols would hit a pair of two-run shots across the fifth and sixth innings to push their lead to three runs. Oklahoma would respond in the eighth on its own two-run home run from Branch, his third of the season and second in the last three games.
Tennessee added an insurance run in the ninth on a single up the middle to bring the final to 9-7.
Each team left 10 runners on base on the night and the Sooners had four runners thrown out on the base path.
OU's late relievers, Isaac Williams, Nate Smithburg, Mason Bixby and Jason Bodin combined to surrender just one run on one hit with Williams fanning three and Bodin striking out a pair.
