ATLANTA — For the second time in the last five years and sixth time in program history, Oklahoma is headed to Super Regionals.
Facing one of the best offenses in college baseball history, the Sooners stunned No. 2 national seed Georgia Tech with its second straight comeback victory in Monday's winner-take-all matchup, beating the Yellow Jackets 8-7 in 10 innings.
Senior Dayton Tockey was the hero, hitting a solo home run 454 feet over the batter's eye in center field to walk the game off and send Oklahoma to the Lawrence Super Regional, hosted by Kansas, this weekend.
After OU (36-22) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on a Deiten Lachance two-run home run and Dasan Harris RBI single, Georgia Tech (50-11) would score the game's next seven runs to build a 7-3 lead into the seventh inning.
A day after erasing a six-run lead, the Sooners would claw back from Monday's four-run deficit starting with a two-run seventh. Kyle Branch led off the inning with a double, followed by a Jason Walk single before a fielder's choice to Camden Johnson allowed Branch to race home for the first run of the frame. Two batters later, Jaxon Willits ripped a double down the left line to score Johnson from first.
To the eighth, a fielder's choice and error by the GT pitcher on a comeback ball to the mound allowed OU's sixth run to cross home. In the ninth, Willits came through again after Johnson led off the inning with a walk. The junior shortstop singled to right field to tie the game at seven and send the game to extras.
OU right-handed pitcher Jackson Cleveland worked his third straight scoreless inning at the top of the 10th, putting down the Yellow Jackets in order for the second straight inning, setting the stage for the OU offense to walk the game off.
Leading off the bottom of the 10th, on a 3-2 count versus Georgia Tech's Friday night starting pitcher, Tockey blasted the walkoff home run to dead center. It was OU's first walkoff win in the NCAA Tournament since 2008 and sent the Sooners to Super Regionals for the first time since 2022.
OU utilized four pitchers in the contest with Cleveland earning his third win of the season in relief. The senior went a season-long 3.2 innings of scoreless, hitless ball with four strikeouts, tying a season high. Sophomore starting right-handed pitcher Michael Catalano went three innings, surrendering two runs on four hits with two walks and one strikeout. Other relievers Jason Bodin (2.2 IP) and Brisco Smith (0.2) saw action with Bodin fanning three.
LJ Mercurius (P), Deiten Lachance (C) and Jaxon Willits (SS) were named to the Atlanta Regional All-Tournament Team with Lachance being crowned the weekend's Most Outstanding Player, hitting .318 in the regional with two home runs and seven RBIs.
