TUCSON, Ariz. – Oklahoma men's golf finished fifth at the Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate on Tuesday afternoon, marking its fifth top-five finish in eight tournaments this season.
The 14th-ranked Sooners (5, -17) were led by
Jase Summy and
Ryder Cowan, who each placed in the top 10.
Clark Van Gaalen joined the duo in the top 20 at the par-72 Tucson Country Club that hosted 14 teams.
Summy, a national player of the year watch list selection, posted rounds of 68-72-69 to tie for third at 7-under par. The Keller, Texas, native extended his school record for rounds in the 60s to 46, totaled 11 birdies and closed with a bogey-free 69 (-3). Summy now owns 20 career top-20 finishes, tied with Cowan for the team lead.
Cowan, a Haskins Award watch list selection, tied for eighth after rounds of 71-71-68. The All-America honoree opened his final round with an eagle on the par-5 first hole and added four birdies on Tuesday to climb into the top 10.
Van Gaalen opened the tournament with a 66 but followed with rounds of 76 and 70 to tie for 15th. The sophomore from Turlock, Calif., now has 11 top-20 finishes in 18 career events.
True freshman
Coltrane Mittag tied for 43rd at 4-over, while
Cameron Cheek rounded out the lineup in a tie for 55th at 7-over.
Host Arizona, ranked No. 22, won the event at 25-under par. Long Beach State (2, -24), No. 5 Arizona State (T3, -21) and Colorado (T3, -21) rounded out the top five with OU.
Long Beach State's Alejandro De Castro ran away with the individual title at 13-under par, winning by three shots.
Oklahoma returns to action March 23-24 at the Valspar Collegiate at Floridian National Golf Club in Palm City, Fla.
