NORMAN — University of Oklahoma linebacker Owen Heinecke was named the Burlsworth Trophy national Walk-On of the Week after his performance in leading the Sooners to a 27-24 win over No. 1 Texas on Saturday at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, the Brandon Burlsworth Foundation announced Tuesday. To be eligible for the Burlsworth Trophy, a player must have begun his career as a walk-on athlete.

Heinecke, who is in his sixth year collegiately and was a walk-on in his first three seasons with the Sooners, logged a team-high nine tackles, including a career-high 2.5 for loss, and a QB hurry to lead Oklahoma's defensive effort against Texas. Five of his nine tackles resulted in gains of one yard or fewer and seven resulted in gains of fewer than three yards (the other plays went for four and six yards).

The Tulsa, Okla., product and a 2026 team captain has started all five games this season and been OU's leading tackler in four of the five contests. He now has 16.5 career tackles for loss, all since the start of last season. He ranks second on the team this year with his 4.5 tackles for loss.
Ā
Heinecke helped give the Sooners their first win against a No. 1-ranked team since 2007 and first over a No. 1-ranked opponent while unranked in the AP poll. It was also OU's first victory over Texas when the Longhorns were the AP No. 1 team.

Oklahoma (3-2, 1-1 SEC) plays No. 15/17 Kentucky (5-1, 3-1 SEC) on Saturday at Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. on SEC Network.
