Sooners Walk Off No. 1 Texas

October 10, 2026 | Football

DALLAS — Tate Sandell drilled a 47-yard field goal as time expired to cap off Oklahoma'sĀ 27-24 win over No. 1 Texas Saturday at the Cotton Bowl in the 122nd edition of the Allstate Red River Rivalry. The Sooners (3-2, 1-1 SEC) scored touchdowns in all three phases of the game to upend a No. 1 team for the first time since a 38-17 win over Missouri in 2007.

Oklahoma overcame a 10-point halftime deficit as the defense limited the Longhorns (4-1, 1-1 SEC) to seven points in the second half and ignited the capacity crowd of 92,100 with a pair of interceptions. Courtland Guillory picked off Arch Manning at the Oklahoma 39-yard line to set the stage for the late game heroics.

John Mateer found Isaiah Sategna III for a 13-yard completion along the Texas sideline and followed up with a 20-yard back shoulder strike to Sategna III to put Oklahoma at the Texas 20-yard line with nine seconds remaining. Both completions on the game-winning drive where upheld under booth review.

The Sooners put the ball on the left hash with a Mateer run and called timeout with three seconds remaining. Following a Texas timeout, Sandell stepped up and a laced the Sooners' second walk-off game-winning field goal in program history. Ā

Trailing 17-10 entering the fourth quarter, OU evened the contest on a two-yard Lloyd Avant touchdown run just 12 seconds into the final frame. Peyton Bowen gave the Sooners their first lead with a 42-yard pick-6 on the ensuing Longhorns possession. He collected an overthrown ball by the scrambling Manning and raced by a handful of would-be tacklers before pushing through a final pair of Longhorns for a 24-17 advantage with 10:07 remaining.

Texas responded with an efficient 75-yard scoring drive capped off by a Manning to Jermaine Bishop, Jr. 15-yard strike at the 6:32 mark. It was Manning's third touchdown pass of the night. He finished the game 19-of-31 for 260 yards with the two interceptions proving to be too much for the Longhorns to overcome. Ā Ā

Gianni Spetic was wide right on a 53-yard field goal attempt with 1:55 left, but Oklahoma went three and out to give the ball back to Texas in the final minute.

Both defenses came out strong in the opening half with the first five drives of the game resulting in three and outs. The Longhorns opened the scoring with a 41-yard Manning to Cam Coleman strike at the 6:56 mark of the first quarter.

Oklahoma forced three and outs on each of Texas' next two possessions and evened the score at 7-7 on a Dakoda Fields blocked punt recovery in the end zone at the beginning of the second quarter. Danny Okoye had a sprawling block of a Mac Chiumento punt attempt from the end zone, and Fields smothered the rolling ball just before it crossed the end line for the Sooners first blocked punt recovery for a touchdown since the 2019 season.

Mateer completed 18-of-26 passes for 155 yards, and Avant finished with 72 yards on 10 carries. His 42-yard burst in the third quarter helped set up a 53-yard Sandell field goal.

Owen Heinecke helped anchor the defense with nine tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss, while Peyton Bowen and Trystan Haynes each had seven stops.
