CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – A trio of Sooners sit inside the top 15 as No. 5 Oklahoma holds fifth place after day one of the Invitational at the Honors Course.
Oklahoma (5, -4) played 36 holes on Monday in Chattanooga and closed the opening day six shots back of No. 7 Ole Miss, who leads the tournament at 10-under.
PJ Maybank III,
Ryder Cowan and
Matthew Troutman are all in position to secure top-20 finishes at the event, which features seven teams ranked in Golf Channel's preseason top 15.
Maybank III (T7, -2) surged in the morning round with a 5-under 67, his 12th career round in the 60s. The Cheboygan, Mich., native was in second place after round one, but a 2-over 74 in the afternoon dropped him into a tie for seventh. The junior is seeking his third career top-10 finish and looks to improve on his career-best T6 at the 2024 Spring Indy at WinStar.
Cowan (T11, -2) provided steady play for head coach
Ryan Hybl's squad. The preseason All-American carded rounds of 69 and 73 to share 11th. His day was highlighted by a hole-out eagle on the 500-yard par-4 15th, which played as the second-hardest hole at the par-72 course.
Troutman (T11, -2) paired a 1-over 73 in the morning with a 3-under 69 in the afternoon to move into a tie for 11th with Cowan. The Louisville, Ky., product has been a model of consistency for the Sooners, recording nine top-20 finishes in 13 career events.
Clark Van Gaalen (T32, +3) used an even-par 72 in the second round to climb into a share of 32nd.
Jase Summy (T47, +7) rounded out Oklahoma's lineup in 47th.
Sophomore
Andrew Ramos (T63, +13) made his debut as part of the Sooner contingent, competing unattached from the lineup as an individual.
In the individual race, Ole Miss' Cam Tankersley and Tennessee's Jackson Herrington share the lead at 6-under. Trailing the Rebels on the team leaderboard is No. 10 Vanderbilt, No. 6 Virginia, No. 3 Auburn and then the fifth-ranked Sooners.
Oklahoma has finished in the top five in 11 of its last 12 regular-season events. The Sooners will look to extend that streak on Tuesday by climbing the leaderboard in pursuit of their first win of the season.
Tee times for the final round will be released on Monday night. Live scoring is available on Clippd.
